After sixteen years in school, it’s time to enter the real world. Follow Brooke as she discovers the do’s & don’ts of entering the business world.

It’s hard to believe it’s been four years since I made the biggest decision of my life. Deciding to leave California and moving to Seattle for college was terrifying at the time, but now I couldn’t imagine spending my college years anywhere else. I think Tom Petty described the college experience perfectly when he said:

“You have four years to be irresponsible here. Relax. Work is for people with jobs. You’ll never remember class time, but you’ll remember time you wasted hanging out with your friends. So, stay out late. Go out on a Tuesday with your friends when you have a paper due Wednesday. Spend money you don’t have. Drink ’til sunrise. The work never ends, but college does…”

Now that winter quarter is winding down and in just a short few weeks I will begin my last quarter of college, the realization that I have three months to find a job is really setting in.  In the past few weeks I have updated my resume and started writing cover letters to send out to advertising agencies I’m interested in. I have learned there are a million different views on both resumes and cover letters. So I figured I would let you in on two things I have found extremely helpful.

“The economy is rising” has been a common headline recently, but does that mean there are more jobs available? More importantly, are there jobs available for recent college graduates with only internship experience?

Coming from a soon to be college graduate, it is quite intimidating to be competing head to head with people who’ve been in the business for years and are applying for the same jobs. This blog will follow me, Brooke Salisbury, a senior at the University of Washington as I embark on the greatest job hunt of my life. From prospecting to interviewing, I will share my hardships in hope of making this process a little easier for future graduates.

I am a Business and Marketing major with a passion for Advertising, therefore my dream is to secure a position at one of the many agencies in downtown Seattle. Although some may feel “any job is better than no job;” my goal is simply not to settle and I encourage others in my position to do the same. It may take a long time, but finding a job that’s right for me is worth the wait.  It’d be terrible to have to re-enter the job market in a year or two because the job I chose didn’t actually fit.

Now I am completely aware that several people hate advertising and believe me I know that not all advertising is great, that is why I want to work for an agency that creates truly meaningful work. To improve your view of advertising and show you exactly why I love it; I will post an advertisement I enjoy at the end of every post.

Since the Super Bowl is this weekend, I found it fitting to feature a commercial from last year’s game. I wasn’t a huge fan of last year’s ads, but I did find this one pretty comical and there will be new ones featured during this year’s game. You can view all of last year’s commercials here.

Did you know a special episode of Glee is airing after the game? I don’t know about you, but I sure am excited for this episode, mainly because they’re performing “Thriller”! It’s been proven that shows airing after the Super Bowl bring in the most rankings, the 1996 Friends episode “The One After the Superbowl” brought in more viewers than the series finale! Now that’s saying something! Take a mental note of your favorite commercial during the game and compare it to my favorite, featured in my next post!
