Emily Kane

After the birth of her first daughter in 2006, balancing work and a young family had become a challenge for new working mother, Emily Kane.  In a tanking economy, her corporate career in sales became more demanding and less rewarding.  But, in the stress and chaos of it all: Emily found the courage to forge her own path and follow her dreams.

The inspiration? One familiar to moms and kids everywhere: cookies and milk.

“I went back to work after my first daughter was born and found myself in a new situation — trying to manage work life, home life, and fitting in the time to pump during an already busy day. My milk supply started to go down and I worried that I wouldn’t be able to provide enough milk for my baby.” Emily says.  “I didn’t realize how important breastfeeding would become to me once I became a mother.  And, I knew I had to find to a way to continue.”

New Gal’s Guide to San Francisco – A recent transplant on a mission to explore the best that San Francisco and the Bay Area have to offer.

Seattle boasts some top of the line seafood and of course there are Tom Douglas’s amazing restaurants, but no one can argue that San Francisco is a world class food city. However, that can also equal throwing down some world class amounts of money for that amazing meal at hundreds of places to choose from. Don’t fear SF newbies, I’ve got a great list of personally tried and recommended spots to grab an awesome meal without breaking the bank.

Best All-You-Eat-Sushi: Sushi Hunter- 1701 Powell Street, North Beach

Sushi Hunter

If you’re like me and get super cravings that only sushi can conquer, the place you HAVE to go is Sushi Hunter. They have an awesome all-you-can-eat menu ($25 Monday-Thursday, $28 Friday-Sunday) and when they say all-you-can eat, they really mean it. The restaurant is a little small, but they can easily accommodate groups (I have personally been in with 11 people before). The fish is fresh and the service is good. They have a lot of creative specialty rolls and all of the basics, plus a large selection of Nigiri and appetizers. I recommend the Hot Angel Roll myself.

I believe one of my greatest skills as a woman business owner is an innate ability to effectively reach a key group of affluent, female consumers.  Ladies who have an exponential influence on purchase decisions – the ones who spend more, know more and talk more about the products and services they love. The New York Times has published studies on what is called the “Marketing Multiplier” Effect. Marketing Multipliers are people with online voices that your customers listen to. Some call this “Word of Mouth Marketing”. I am choosing to refer to them as “Marketing Multipliers”. Since the topic of this blog is about reaching women specifically; I am going to share with you 4 first steps to reach women marketing multipliers.

Chic on the Cheap is a bugetista fashion blog for the busy career woman

These days one must think twice about spending loads of cash on the newest fashions…

This dress is by the retailer AllSaints but was found at the second hand store Crossroads for less then half the original price. Most of us have our favorite pieces that will stand the test of time and that are interchangeable-perfect! When looking for great pieces at a fraction of the cost one must know where to begin. Second hand stores and consignment shops are the best. Seattle has a lot to offer!

1. Do search the websites of your favorite brands. Check celebrity sites such as peoplestylewatch.com or vogue.com for inspiration, plus they have access to the most cutting edge finds.

2. Ask the consignment. retailers when they get the bulk of there shipment in, or what the style is of there most frequent donors.

3. While searching your closet and websites. be thinking about what you already have, and different ways to mix and match.

For example: Does this blouse go with skinny jeans? skirts? or wide leg trousers? The goal is to get optimal use out of each garment.

4. If you must buy an expensive piece, make sure that it is versatile, you want the most
for your money.

GPH Makeover Winner Heather Ann and her Style Mentor, Lauren Foster from 425 Magazine.

Did you know that in 2010, the YWCA  helped over 60,000 women and families? We want you to meet Heather Ann: A busy single mom of three active, adorable boys.

Doctors diagnosed her youngest son with post-traumatic stress disorder, which was caused by stress in the womb and in infancy.

“My ex-husband was an alcoholic and gambler,” Heather Ann explained. Leaving her ex-husband was the most difficult – but the most important – thing she’s done in her life. And it’s something she couldn’t have accomplished without the YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish.

“It was hard. I was in the shelter, and there was time that my ex would call me, and I’d be broken, and he’d be like, ‘If you’d just come back,’” Heather Ann said, adding, “When you’re in the shelter, you’re like, ‘I’d do anything to get away from all these people that I don’t know coming and going.’”

Life Lens Career Coaching gives insights on navigating your career development, creative sparks and entrepreneurial spirit so your career and life stay in focus.

Thanks to Darnell, the GPH crew, the Neiman Marcus team and the 10 amazing women who graced the pink carpet with their confidence and sparkle as they showcased their remarkable makeovers at the fabulous February event!   The “Love You – Boost Your Wardrobe, Boost Your Biz” event inspired this month’s post – Knowing What You Love: Part 1 – That Inner Spark.

Each of the 10 women chosen for the makeover and fashion show was selected for their passion, courage and dedication to making a positive impact in the world.  As each nominee took their walk down the pink carpet, we heard their brief bio and got a sense of what inspired their work and nomination. As they passed me, I admired the artistry of their new look…but what struck me most was each woman’s unique radiance.  Every woman had an inner spark that was blazing brilliantly that night – it was glorious to experience it!  Thank you ladies for owning your beauty and being such an inspiration in the work you do!

Like these 10 ladies, we all have the opportunity with each day to harness our passion and courage and then dedicate ourselves to something worthwhile in our work and our lives.  However, to do this and do it well, a woman must know what she loves and let that love shine through. This starts with loving ourselves.  Oscar Wilde, the famous Irish writer, playwright, and poet shares, “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.”  Loving ourselves wholly – quirks, mistakes and all – ignites our inner spark and allows us to live a life we love thus paving the way for our unique contribution to the world to count for something!  Like the title of the event suggests, making time to take good care of ourselves by investing in things like stunning wardrobes that highlight our best features and actions like giving back that boost our spirits, can in fact boost our business and work in the world.  Why?  Because they make us feel good about ourselves which lifts our confidence.   Clothed in our own confidence – that Inner Spark – we have the courage to step up, reach out and share what makes us unique, give voice to our ideas, offer our services and make a difference.

What inspires your Inner Spark?  How do you reach out to show your spark to the world?

Feel free to share your thoughts in my comment box.

Tune in next month for “Knowing What You Love: Part 2 – Creative Excursions to Keep You Connected to Your Inner Spark”  Read more

Maile and Kassie Go To Hollywood: Two Small Town Seattle Girls in the Heart of a Hollywood Grammy After Party

Official Event Flyer

A few weeks ago, my business partner Kassie and I were lucky enough to attend a Grammy after party at the historic House of Blues, in West Hollywood.  The party was a charity concert by Three Six Zero and Roc Nation.  Featured artists included Calvin Harris, Rihanna and DeadMous5.   Tickets to the event started at $1,000 and even went as high as $50,000 and up!  Proceeds from the benefit went to the Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer artists’ program at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and the Children’s Orthopedic Center.  Kassie and I could not have been more honored to attend such an amazing event.  And honestly, this was almost like a once in a lifetime opportunity for us.

Our trip began with the busiest day of our lives.  Sunday morning 7 AM flight, interview preparation for an article we were writing on the Grammy’s, dress pick-ups, and the inevitable stops at about 15 different places in Hollywood.  All while carrying our vintage Chanel Bags and jewelry that Bag Borrow or Steal graciously let us borrow.  And let me assure you, we did not carry these items lightly.  We guarded them and carried them with the respect they deserve, being cautious not to get even a single a scratch on them.    A little shout out and thank you to the Glam Squad over at BBOS for styling us in some hot accessories.
